Black Poplar Mushroom

Agrocybe aegerita, black poplar, or velvet pioppino is probably one of the first mushrooms to be cultivated.  They are a subtropical species and a preferential hardwood, white rot saprotroph.

In the wild they are a good but uncommon edible.

Shown here the caps are near maturity, but are white to cream in color when young.
