Do nut cut through this fruit, instead open a pomegranate by scoring it along the outside then prying it open. The red, edible arils and the inedible white pulp membranes will be visible.

These arils sink and the pulp floats.

Or most of the arils can be quickly separated from the pulp by cutting the pomegranate in half, scoring the outside rinds multiple times, then striking the rind. The arils will jump from the pomegranate, leaving only the most tightly held behind.
