Barrel Cactus

August 14, 2012

Barrel cacti are a popular ornamental where they grow naturally.

Though largely inedible, they produce a small yellow fruit.  Barrel cactus fruit is unpalatable, but indigenous American populations relied on them for a last resort.

Likely a beverage similar to tequila could be produced by fermentation and distillation of a liquor produced from barrel cactus fruits.
