The matsutake (Tricholoma matsutake) is one of the most high prized mushrooms.  Because it has a mycorrhizal relationship with specific pines, commercial cultivation is not possible.  The small size of foraged yields is a great contributor to their high price.

Matsutakes have been sought after in Japan and China for thousands of years.  The grow naturally in Japan, China, the Pacific Northwest in the United States, Korea, Laos, Canada, Finland, Sweden, etc.

In modern-day Japan, the majority of matsutakes are now imported from abroad.
