Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) has many names: baking soda, bread soda, cooking soda, bicarbonate of soda, sodium bicarb, bicarb, or salaretus.
It is commonly used in cooking to evolve carbon dioxide gas from an acidic solution. The gas produced provides an easy leavening agent.
Outside the box, baking soda is a soft white powder with a slightly salty taste.
