The morphology and nomenclature related to the chayote varies from place to place (see Guatila), but always it is a small green cucurbit that grows on the Sechium edule vine.

Other names for the chayote or guatila include cidra, pear squash, vegetable pear, chouchoute, choko, güisquil, or papa de pobre.  The last name refers to its similarity to an uncooked potato and the fact that it has little commercial value.
