The morphology of black poplar mushrooms varies considerably.
Carefully cultivating mushrooms is a good way to preserve a consistent appearance between batches. Concerns of CO2 and light levels, temperature, and whether the substrate is cased before encouraging a flush all seem to have an effect on the end appearance.
Cultivated black poplar mushrooms of a particular strain may adopt a squat morphology like that of the mushrooms pictured here. Always though, casing creates mushrooms of a larger size.
