Lulo, Halved

Halved Lulo

Lulos are another sweet solanum consumed explicitly as a fruit (see uchuvas).  Contrast to tomatoes or tomates de arbol (or variant) for nightshades that cannot decide whether they are vegetables or fruits.

Lulo trees begin producing fruits in a single season.  It is not uncommon to see developing fruits on plants that are under four feet tall.

This lulo was from the Carulla in the Nogal barrio in Bogotá.  One of these lulos was split to produce this illustration.
