Cascabel chilis when fresh are also known as bola chilis. Spanish bola means ball, and cascabel is bell or rattle; when fresh this chili is round like a ball, and when dried the seeds become loose and able to rattle around.
This is a very practically named pepper.
The word “pepper” is less so. Pepper in English refers to both chilies and bell peppers–or what Australians refer to as capsicums. (Also Australian English spells the former as “chillies.”) Pepper also refers to that ubiquitous black table condiment alongside salt. Likely English came to refer spicy food as pepper.
